There were several Armenian cultural and educational organizations formed starting in the 1890s. Those included libraries, educational societies, theatrical groups etc. In 1898 a Providence Armenian music band was organized by the efforts of Rev. H. Sarkesian
In 1909, the first Providence theatre group called "Lernayeen", later renamed "Azadamard", produced religious, political, dramatic and comic plays. They eventually numbered over a hundred actors and actresses. Another theatrical group "Abrilyan Saner" was formed and played to audiences in 1932. The first production or the opera 'Anoush' In 1526 was opened at the Majestic Theatre (Trinity Repertory Theatre) in Providence.
The first educational society in Providence was the Pro-Educational Association of Kharpert established in 1894. Founders of this society were Setrak Samourian and Boghos Aloojian. The founding meeting took place at The Citizens' Home, 55 Lydia Street. Harutune Samourian, Hovaness Soghigian Arakel Soghigian, Soghomon Kazanjian, Hovsep Keshishian and others became charter members
The Armenian National Economic Union Library was formed in 1895 with the purpose of maintaining the Armenian love for the Fatherland and language. Such people as Setrak Soghigian and Mardiros Keshishian, both or Kharpert, Caspar Arzoomanian and Harutune Mangooni, or Palu, and Setra Samourian were involved in the development of the facility. To assist the functioning of the organization, the Armenian Catholicos Khrimyan Hayrik's work "Babig-Tornig" was auctioned.
